| Enhance someone's fantasy world with these enchanting Medieval products! A Brief History on the Development of Armor. War has been a part of human culture since the beginning of time. In a battle or war, certain tools or devices are used in order to gain an advantage. An unarmed man was known as a dead man. Therefore, the need to develop some type of protection was needed to help stop or at least hinder death. That defensive protective covering was known as armor, also spelled armour. Armor is usually made of metal, wood or leather and is worn to protect the body against weapon attacks. Protecting oneself in battle has always been a concern for any soldier. Medieval knights were no exception. Armor helped to define knights as a military unit and social class. In fact, during the Middle Ages, armoring oneself was very expensive and only the wealthy could afford to do so. Not only this, but the more one had to spend on armor, the better it was made and easier to maneuver. Leather, the most common form of protection, was the most used, least expensive, and least appreciated. Leather was also used to make shields and helmets. Again, this was the "basic," form of protection and most common. The most expensive was armor made of metal. A blacksmith would work tremendously hard and for extremely long periods to create any type of armor. They were also known to experiment with different designs claiming theirs were more durable and lighter than the other black smith's creations. A good suit of armor, shield or pair of boots was well cherished by families. Often, these items would be passed down from family to family as an heirloom. If an article of armor was good enough to protect a man through a battle, his family would take tremendous care in keeping it safe, clean, and sturdy. With the discovery of new metals, armor became more durable and less cumbersome for a knight. |
